Darren joined the United Kingdom Immigration Service in 1991 and worked in most areas of the immigration control including border operations, inland investigations, training, policy, and postings overseas in Asia and Africa. In 2006 whilst leading intelligence operations at Heathrow, he began working with HM Revenue and Customs and police to develop data led risk-based targeting for immigration purposes. In 2008, with the merger of UK customs and immigration functions within the newly created Border Force and after a period of leading joint teams, Darren was appointed as the Product Owner for the cross governmental e-Borders System. Continuing his focus on the use of data for risking, in 2011 he became the Head of Targeting and Intelligence (Aviation) In 2018, he led the development of the United Kingdom’s Pre-Load Data Targeting for Aviation Security.
Darren is currently Deputy Director Border Transformation (Goods) part of the team designing and delivering Border Force’s future goods operations delivering a secure and facilitative frontier control using advanced technologies and modern processes, developing, and leveraging the skills of our workforce. As a World Customs Organisation Recognised Expert, Darren has led international workshops focussed on co-ordinated border management and the use of technologies and is keen to learn from the experiences of others.
