Tom Mueller is an investigative journalist and a senior consultant at the Cross-border Research Association, where he runs “the Pencast," the official podcast of the PEN-CP project.
His most recent book, How to Make a Killing (W W Norton, August, 2023), is a look at US healthcare through the lens of the dialysis industry, where a miracle cure has become a nightmare for many patients. His previous books are: Crisis of Conscience (Penguin Random House, 2019), a cultural history of whistleblowing and fraud, and Extra Virginity (W W Norton, 2012), a New York Times best-selling account of olive oil culture, history, and crime. His articles have appeared in the New Yorker, National Geographic Magazine, New York Times Magazine, and the Atlantic Monthly.
Mueller earned his undergraduate degree at Harvard (graduated summa cum laude), and his PhD at Oxford (as a Rhodes Scholar). After university, he worked as an associate in M&A at Goldman Sachs in their London and Frankfurt offices, and studied classical guitar in Seville, Spain with América Martínez, a disciple of Andrés Segovia. He has lived or worked in 49 countries.
